Many households received apples or pears as Chuseok gifts. According to the '2023 Food Consumption Behavior Survey' conducted by the Korea Rural Economic Institute, apples were the most preferred fruit among Koreans, followed by pears. However, from a traditional Korean medicine perspective, apples and pears are fruits that can be used like medicinal herbs.

 

 

Director Kim Haneul of Busan Jaseong Oriental Medicine Hospital said, "The Dongui Bogam states that consuming juice from the stomach can help manage coughs and asthma, and is good for relieving throat and nasal pain caused by heat." She added, "Apples quench thirst and are effective for abdominal pain caused by acute gastrointestinal diseases (gwalgran)." Above all, the dietary fiber contained in apples lowers blood cholesterol levels and positively impacts cardiovascular health.

 

Various vitamins and minerals also help strengthen immunity and produce energy. Pears are good for replenishing body fluids and, with their rich dietary fiber, enhance digestive health and are effective in preventing constipation. Additionally, apples and pears contain many nutrients in their skins. Apple skins contain polyphenol compounds that reduce inflammation in the body and prevent cell damage. Pear skins contain luteolin, which is beneficial for preventing respiratory diseases.

 

Apples and pears can be consumed alongside meat to create a good nutritional synergy. When paired with pork, the dietary fiber and potassium in apples help to eliminate sodium from the pork. Pears are classified as fruits with a strong cold property in traditional Korean medicine, and when combined with warm-blooded beef, they aid in the absorption of beneficial nutrients. Using apples or pears in meat marinades can also help tenderize and soften the protein components in the meat.

 

However, excessive consumption should be avoided. Since it contains a high amount of sugar, it can have adverse effects on diabetics or people who need to control their blood sugar levels. If a large amount of the gifted fruit is juiced into juice or consumed excessively, it can lead to rapid absorption of fructose, so caution is advised. This causes a large amount of glucose to flood into the bloodstream, increasing the risk of diabetes. Additionally, apples contain both acid and sugar, which increases the risk of dental caries. The Dental Research Institute at King's College London in the UK has reported that apples pose a 3.7 times higher risk of dental damage compared to carbonated drinks or alcohol.

 

Director Kim Ha-neul said, "Apples and pears are good for cardiovascular health, replenishing body fluids, and promoting digestion, making them perfect gifts for holidays." He also emphasized, "However, excessive consumption can cause indigestion and blood sugar spikes, so it is important to consume them in moderation."
