A study has shown that consistent coffee consumption helps slow down skin aging.
The joint research team from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences studied 16,677 adults registered with the UK Biobank to investigate the relationship between beverage consumption and skin aging. Participants completed surveys about their consumption habits of four types of beverages: coffee, tea, alcohol, and sweetened drinks.
The research results showed that coffee was the only beverage with a protective effect against facial skin aging. It was found that the anti-aging effect increased with higher coffee consumption. The research team explained that polyphenols contained in coffee help improve skin elasticity and moisture, thereby delaying wrinkles and other signs of aging. Additionally, it is said that caffeine, a major component of coffee, slows skin aging due to its ability to remove damaged keratinocytes and reactive oxygen species.
The degree of coffee roasting has also been shown to affect skin aging. Since polyphenols are sensitive to heat, lightly roasted coffee may have a stronger anti-aging effect than dark roasted coffee.
It is also important to drink a moderate amount consistently. To maximize the anti-aging effects of coffee, it is better not to add cream and sugar, which increase oxidative stress in the tissues.
The research team said, "However, excessive consumption of coffee can cause problems such as sleep disorders due to caffeine," and "Drinking two to three cups of coffee a day can provide sufficient anti-aging effects."
