Frequent consumption of processed meat increases the risk of developing dementia, and replacing processed meat with legumes or nuts can reduce the risk of developing dementia, according to research findings.
The research team at Brigham Women's Hospital in the United States tracked 130,000 adults over 43 years. The team collected nutritional data from participants every 2 to 4 years. They examined how often participants consumed processed red meat, nuts, and legumes. Subsequently, they compared the cognitive functions of those who frequently consumed processed meats with those who rarely did.
The analysis showed that people who frequently consumed processed meat (at least two servings per day) had a 14% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who rarely consumed processed meat (less than three servings per month). For each additional daily intake of processed meat, the brain regions responsible for regulating language and behavior aged by an additional 1.6 years. However, replacing 40 grams of processed meat with an equivalent amount of beans or nuts reduced the risk of cognitive decline by 20%.
A previous study involving approximately 500,000 adults also found that consuming 25 grams of processed meat per day increases the risk of dementia by 44%. 25 grams of processed meat is equivalent to about one slice of bacon or one slice of ham.
The research team analyzed that nitrates added during the processing of processed meat have a negative impact on brain function. Nitrates are converted into nitrosamines in the body, which damage cells and neurons, thereby impairing cognitive function. Nitrosamines promote brain inflammation, break down important neurotransmitters, and create plaques that worsen brain health. Furthermore, saturated fats and cholesterol in processed meat accumulate in blood vessels, restricting blood flow to the brain and leading to cognitive decline.
Replacing processed meats with legumes or nuts can prevent the intake of harmful substances such as nitrates, sodium, and toxins. The nutrients found in beans and nuts help improve blood circulation and enhance brain health.
Dr. Maria Carillo, who led the research, said, "This study is one of the most credible investigations revealing the link between processed meat consumption and dementia, as it tracked individuals over several decades."
