Office worker A often eats protein bars to gain muscle mass and make meals easier. However, replacing meals with protein bars frequently leads to excessive protein intake. If this continues, it can lead to various health problems.

Excessive protein intake can cause constipation.

Ammonia, produced by protein breakdown, is converted to urea in the liver and excreted in the urine. Consuming a lot of protein increases the amount excreted through urine, drawing water from the body to be used elsewhere.

If water is drawn from the colon at this time, constipation may occur.

Protein is also very filling, which tends to make you eat less fiber, which helps relieve constipation.

People with kidney problems should also be careful. .

Protein contains nitrogen, so excessive protein consumption generates a large amount of nitrogenous waste during protein breakdown. This inevitably places a strain on the kidneys, which filter out waste from the body. If this condition persists, it increases the risk of kidney disease and impaired function. When the kidneys fail to function properly, nitrogenous compounds, organic acids, and phosphoric acids produced during protein metabolism cannot be properly excreted. These accumulate in the body, increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Uremia, a condition caused by the inability to excrete waste, can also occur.

Eating too much protein increases your risk of developing gout.

Gout is a disease in which uric acid, the final metabolic product, is not properly excreted and accumulates as crystals in joint cartilage, tendons, and surrounding tissues. High-protein foods are rich in purines (a type of nitrogen compound), and the uric acid produced by the breakdown of these purines is the primary cause of gout. High protein intake leads to the accumulation of uric acid in the joints, and the immune system mistakes the uric acid crystals for foreign invaders and attacks them, causing pain.

Meanwhile, the recommended daily protein intake is 0.8 to 1 g per kg of body weight. For those training to build muscle or the elderly with low muscle mass, the recommended daily intake can be increased to approximately 1.2 g per kg of body weight, depending on health. To prevent diseases caused by excessive protein intake, the amount of protein consumed through protein bars should be adjusted to the recommended intake.
