Singer Kim Yuna (50), famous as the vocalist of the band Jaurim, revealed her recent status after visiting a hospital for treatment of cranial nerve paralysis.
On the 3rd, Kim Yoon-ah posted a photo on her SNS of herself lying in a hospital bed receiving an IV drip. Along with a prayer emoticon, Kim Yoon-ah wrote, “It’s auxiliary battery day again. Please take good care of me this month too.” She continued, “I’m in the middle of a dream feast that I have when I’m sick these days, and my vitality level is faint, so that’s understandable. I need to grill some energy mushrooms and energy bass to fill up my food storage.” Previously, Kim Yoon-ah appeared on the lecture program “15 Minutes to Change the World” and said, “In 2011, after making Jaurim’s 8th full-length album, my immune system became so weak that I suffered from cranial nerve paralysis.
I have a congenital immune deficiency and am still receiving monthly treatment. At the time, I had cranial nerve paralysis, which affected my senses of smell, hearing, taste, temperature and cold, and even my facial muscles, upper body muscles, and vagus nerves, causing problems.” He said at the time, “Even now, due to the aftereffects of the paralysis, some functions have not returned, and I still have a slight voice disorder, which I am suppressing with force.” Can someone with a congenital immune deficiency actually suffer from cranial nerve paralysis?
Immunodeficiency refers to a general term for diseases caused by immune system dysfunction. Immunodeficiency is divided into primary and secondary immunodeficiency. Primary immunodeficiency occurs congenitally and is classified according to the defective immune system into ▲B cell system (humoral immunity), ▲T cell system (cellular immunity), ▲complement system, and ▲phagocytic system abnormalities. Primary immunodeficiency is sometimes diagnosed in newborns, but in some cases, it is not recognized until adulthood and is discovered later. Secondary immunodeficiency occurs when a person with normal immune function contracts a disease that causes a defect in the immune system. HIV infection is a representative example of secondary immunodeficiency.
The most common symptom of immunodeficiency is frequent infections, primarily respiratory infections. Patients are at risk for developing osteomyelitis, meningitis, or sepsis due to two or more systemic bacterial infections. They are also at risk for developing three or more severe respiratory infections per year. Lymphocytosis can also lead to lymphoma.
There are also immunodeficiencies that can cause cranial nerve palsy, like Kim Yuna's. Among primary immunodeficiencies, hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a prime example, known to cause facial paralysis due to cranial nerve palsy. Immunoglobulins are proteins produced by white blood cells in the blood, and hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a condition in which abnormal amounts of immunoglobulins are secreted. According to the Iranian Journal of Child Neurology, hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome causes the immune system to exhibit an excessive allergic reaction. This excessive immune response can also affect the nervous system, leading to conditions such as facial paralysis and quadriplegia.
Meanwhile, symptoms of cranial nerve paralysis vary depending on the damaged nerve.
For example, damage to the third cranial nerve can affect the motor nerves involved in eye movement, causing difficulty moving the eyes or making the pupils react to light.
Neurological recovery from cranial nerve palsy can be attempted through rehabilitation treatment. However, early treatment is crucial, as it maximizes functional recovery.
