To stay healthy, it's best to maintain a healthy weight from a young age through old age. Maintaining a healthy weight doesn't mean staying the same after adulthood, when height stops growing. As body composition changes with age, the criteria for a healthy weight also change.

While maintaining a slim figure is beneficial when you're young, a slightly plump figure can actually be beneficial for your health as you age. We looked into the appropriate weight for each age group, based on data from the American health and medical media outlet Healthline.

 

After the age of 60, you should avoid losing too much weight.

According to a team of researchers at the Australian National University, weight loss in old age can be a warning sign of premature death. A study of 16,000 age pensioners found that those who lost more than 10% of their body weight were three times more likely to die within a few years than those who did not.

Most people start gaining weight after their early to mid-30s, and their weight continues to increase until they reach their 60s, after which it begins to decrease. However, it is necessary to manage your weight so that you do not lose too much weight in your old age.

 

What is the ideal weight standard?

How can we assess appropriate weight? The most commonly used metric is body mass index (BMI). While this index measures obesity based on weight and height, it's not a definitive measurement standard.

This is because it doesn't take into account the amount of fat and muscle mass. A person with an average BMI can be skinny fat with a lot of visceral fat, while someone with an above-average BMI can be healthy with a lot of muscle mass.

 

A more accurate measurement is the waist-to-height ratio, which is calculated by dividing your waist circumference by your height. A waist circumference of less than half your height is generally considered healthy. Fat accumulated around the waist is distributed around the internal organs, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

If you want to establish a simpler standard, you could evaluate your body type as being "apple-shaped" or "pear-shaped." A pear-shaped body, with its sunken center, has a lower risk of developing health problems, while an apple-shaped body, with its bulging center, requires more care.

 

As we age, we need to maintain our muscles through strength training.

While maintaining a slim figure is recommended until middle age, caution is needed to avoid underweight as you approach old age. Being underweight in old age can lead to nutritional deficiencies, an increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis, and a weakened immune system.


To avoid frailty in old age, it's important to minimize muscle loss by engaging in strength training and maintaining a healthy diet during middle age. As you approach your 60s, it's crucial to eat well. While you should limit processed foods and refined carbohydrates, you should also eat plenty of nutrient-dense, high-quality foods like whole grains, legumes, and nuts.

As you reach your 70s and 80s, you should focus on maintaining or gaining weight rather than losing it. While being overweight is detrimental in your youth, reports show that even a slight excess weight in your later years actually reduces the risk of premature death. You should also continue to engage in simple strength training, such as sitting and standing in a chair or doing heel raises while standing.
