Separate washing is recommended for 'agricultural products' type foods.

As fruit prices continue to soar day after day, more people are looking for relatively inexpensive frozen fruits. Last year, the import volume of frozen fruits was 64,000 tons, a 6% increase from the previous year. This is the highest ever import volume on record.
Frozen fruits, which are harvested in season and frozen in large quantities for commercialization, are in high demand due to their low basic purchase price and the ability to store them for over a year. However, there is one thing to check before consuming frozen fruits. It is the 'food type' section on the product packaging. Frozen fruits labeled as 'agricultural products' in the food type section should be washed before eating. This is because if they are marked as agricultural products, they are frozen without a separate cleaning process, and bacteria or residual pesticides may remain.
On the other hand, the 'processed food' type refers to processed foods that have been washed and cooked so that consumers can eat them directly, making it safe to consume immediately. Sometimes, it is difficult to identify the food type on the label, but in such cases, you can check the precautions section, which may say things like 'Be sure to wash before use.' If there are no precautions listed and the food type is not specified, it is safer to wash and eat the product first. The Korea Consumer Agency conducted microbial and residual pesticide tests on 25 imported frozen fruit products such as frozen blueberries, mangoes, and strawberries available in the market, and as a result, E. coli group bacteria were detected in two products at levels higher than the standard.
Additionally, frozen fruits should be eaten immediately after thawing because microorganisms can rapidly multiply at room temperature. Already thawed frozen fruits may have bacteria that have grown, so it is recommended not to refreeze them. The shelf life of frozen fruits is 2 to 3 years when stored at proper temperatures. Once opened, they should be consumed as quickly as possible.
