Walking exercise: Is it more effective before or after eating? If weight loss is the goal, right after a meal is optimal.
An interesting comparative experiment result has been released. It compares the benefits of walking for 30 minutes immediately after a meal versus walking for 30 minutes one hour after a meal. Two experiment participants each performed 30 minutes of walking immediately after lunch and dinner, and another 30 minutes one hour after, over the course of a month, and their weight changes were observed. As a result, the participant who walked immediately after eating lost about 3 kg, while the participant who walked one hour later lost about 1.5 kg. The experiment was repeated three times in total, and the results were the same each time.
The researchers explained that walking led to weight loss because it suppresses the rapid increase in blood glucose after meals. They added, "Since blood glucose levels peak 30 to 60 minutes after a meal, walking should be started before the glucose levels reach their maximum, because insulin secretion acts as a fat hormone." They further stated, "Starting to walk as soon as possible seems to be the most effective way to control blood sugar levels."
Walking after meals is important to develop as a habit. According to a study comparing walking once for 50 minutes a day and walking twice for 25 minutes each time, people who walked twice in shorter sessions experienced greater reductions in waist circumference and more weight loss than those who walked once for a longer period.
