There's a saying, "If you lie down right after eating, you'll turn into a cow." After eating, we often feel tired and want to lie down. However, the habit of lying down immediately after eating can have various negative health effects. Let's explore how lying down after eating affects your health.

Lying down immediately after eating can cause reflux esophagitis. Between the esophagus and the stomach is the lower esophageal sphincter, which prevents stomach acid from flowing back up into the esophagus.

 

Although it opens temporarily when you eat or burp, lying down immediately after a meal lowers the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter, impairing its function. This can cause reflux esophagitis, where food and stomach acid reflux into the esophagus, causing inflammation.

Additionally, the habit of lying down immediately after eating can cause constipation. This is because lying down immediately after a meal reduces the motility of digestive organs such as the stomach and duodenum. Gravity delays the emptying of food from the stomach.


Additionally, the habit of lying down and then falling asleep after a meal can lead to weight gain. This is because the digestive system is inactive during sleep, and basic calorie consumption is not achieved. Even if food left in the stomach is slowly digested, it can easily be stored as fat.

 

It's best not to lie down within two hours of eating. It takes about two hours for food to move from the stomach to the small intestine. Lying down during this time delays food transit time and can cause excessive stomach acid production, which can lead to food reflux.

Therefore, it's recommended to sit or stand for at least two hours after eating. If you must lie down, wait at least 30 minutes before sitting with your upper body tilted at an angle of at least 15 degrees.

 

Additionally, it is recommended to leave a sufficient gap of about three hours between meals and sleep to avoid going to bed immediately after eating.

Meanwhile, drinking coffee after a meal can also be detrimental to your health, as it can cause you to lose the beneficial nutrients you consumed.

 

For example, the caffeine in coffee interferes with iron absorption. When iron and the tannins in coffee combine, tannin iron is formed, reducing iron absorption by up to half.
