There is a saying that "if you lie down immediately after eating, you'll become fat." After eating, you often feel tired and want to lie down. However, the habit of lying down immediately after a meal can have various negative effects on health. Let's find out how lying down after a meal impacts health.

Lying down immediately after eating can cause acid reflux esophagitis. Between the esophagus and the stomach, there is the lower esophageal sphincter, which functions to tighten and prevent stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus.

 

The lower esophageal sphincter temporarily opens when eating or belching, but lying down immediately after a meal reduces the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter, impairing its function. As a result, food and stomach acid can reflux into the esophagus, leading to esophagitis caused by acid reflux.

Additionally, the habit of lying down immediately after a meal can cause constipation. Lying down right after eating reduces the motility of the digestive organs such as the stomach and duodenum. Gravity delays the passage of food from the stomach.


In addition, the habit of lying down after meals and falling asleep can lead to weight gain. This is because the digestive system is not actively functioning during sleep, and basic calorie expenditure does not occur. Even if the remaining food in the stomach is slowly digested, it is easy for fats to accumulate in the body.

 

It is best not to lie down within two hours after a meal. It takes about two hours for food to move from the stomach to the small intestine, and lying down during this time can prolong the movement of food and cause excessive stomach acid secretion, which may lead to reflux.

Therefore, it is recommended to sit or stand for at least two hours after eating. If lying down is unavoidable, it is best to adopt a semi-reclined position with the upper body inclined at an angle of more than 15 degrees after at least 30 minutes.

 

It is also recommended to leave a sufficient interval of about three hours between meals and sleep, allowing enough time so as not to go to bed immediately after eating.

Meanwhile, drinking coffee after a meal can also be harmful to health. Post-meal coffee causes the beneficial nutrients consumed to be lost.

 

For example, the caffeine in coffee interferes with iron absorption. When iron and tannins in coffee meet, tannin-iron complexes are formed, reducing the iron absorption rate by up to half.

Iron is a mineral that plays an important role in transporting oxygen through the blood. A deficiency in iron can lead to anemia.
