A review of consistent management of Crohn's disease symptoms through medication, diet, and lifestyle habits
In my late twenties, I experienced repeated episodes of diarrhea, unbearable abdominal pain, and persistent vomiting in severe cases, leading me to suspect a viral infection or enteritis and visit a hospital. I underwent blood tests, small intestine X-ray, colon X-ray, and colonoscopy, which were diagnosed as early symptoms of Crohn's disease. Fortunately, the affected area of Crohn's disease was not extensive, so I did not undergo surgery but received medication treatment. However, since the symptoms of Crohn's disease improved and then recurred repeatedly, I have been continuously paying attention to my lifestyle habits.
I do not smoke, but there were many smokers around me, and I had a habit of living excessively cleanly. Due to these environmental factors, I believe I developed Crohn's disease as a result of viral infections and an excessive immune response caused by bacteria. Repeated watery diarrhea from Crohn's disease made eating difficult at times, and I experienced significant weight loss.
Crohn's disease is not caused by food, but when there is an inflammatory response, it is recommended to avoid foods high in fat, such as fatty meats and dairy products, as well as alcohol, coffee, carbonated drinks, and fiber-rich vegetables, so I am particularly cautious. I try to consume olive oil or MCT oil instead of cooking oils or canola oil, and I make an effort to eat unsaturated fats while maintaining consistent health management. When Crohn's symptoms are severe, I eat very little soft, bland foods like porridge with minimal stimulation. As a result, I later experienced severe constipation due to Crohn's, so I sometimes took Lactobif probiotic and ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and mackerel. I took supplements such as Chong Kun Dang's RTG Omega-3, multivitamins, and milk thistle in small amounts. Since Crohn's symptoms tend to improve and recur repeatedly, and can worsen due to complications, I am continuously mindful of my diet and lifestyle habits.
