Daily stomach pain from irritable bowel syndrome, this diet helps

Research has shown that the Mediterranean diet can help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The Mediterranean diet consists of plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and legumes, as well as fish, small amounts of red meat, and chicken, with olive oil, rich in monounsaturated fats, primarily used as the cooking oil.

Professor Heidi Staudacher's research team at the Food and Mood Center at the University of Tasmania in Australia conducted a study to investigate the effects of the Mediterranean diet on the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.

To this end, the research team divided 59 patients with irritable bowel syndrome into two groups: 29 patients (experimental group) who followed a Mediterranean diet for six weeks, and 30 patients (control group) who ate as usual. Afterwards, the severity of irritable bowel syndrome was assessed using the IBS-SSS score before and after the experiment for both the experimental and control groups.

According to the research results, 83% of the group that followed the Mediterranean diet showed a decrease in the severity score of irritable bowel syndrome, while only 37% of the control group did.

.

Gastrointestinal disorder symptoms were found to be milder in the experimental group compared to the control group.

At the end of the experiment, depressive symptoms also decreased more in the experimental group than in the control group. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome often also have mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, because there are known signaling pathways between the gut and the brain. Therefore, if the mental health of irritable bowel syndrome patients improves, their gut health may also improve.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic and recurrent gastrointestinal disorder characterized by persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation.

It was reported that the cause is unknown and complete recovery is difficult.

The research team stated, "The overall results suggest that the Mediterranean diet could be a new way to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome."
