Lifestyle changes for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease
I would like to talk about the symptoms and treatments I have tried for reflux esophagitis. I have suffered from reflux esophagitis for a long time. Although I can't say I am completely free from it even now, there has been significant improvement. I believe this improvement is because I have made many efforts to improve in various ways.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease causes a sensation of a foreign body in the throat, and especially a persistent discomfort as if there is phlegm stuck in the throat. As a result, I often drink water because I feel an uneasy sensation. More severe symptoms are probably heartburn, chest pain, and the discomfort caused by stomach acid reflux.
I used to have poor lifestyle habits. A regular routine is really important, but there was a time in the past when I was completely ignorant about health. I would eat whenever I wanted, sleep whenever I wanted, and I would even lie down immediately after eating, which happened quite often. As I continued living like that repeatedly, at some point, I started experiencing acid reflux, waking up in the middle of the night with nausea and a feeling of disgust.
And should I say chest pain and a burning sensation in the chest? It feels different from indigestion and causes an uncomfortable feeling in the chest. I have visited the hospital many times for reflux esophagitis, and taking medication helps. Naturally, soothing the stomach with medicine alleviates the symptoms. However, if I do not improve my eating habits and lifestyle habits as much as the treatment, the problem will inevitably recur.
The doctor emphasized being careful with alcohol, avoiding binge drinking, overeating, and eating late at night. He also advised staying away from greasy foods, alcohol, and coffee. Of course, he mentioned that smoking is also bad. I followed his instructions because the symptoms were recurring more frequently. So I stopped eating late-night snacks, binge eating, and drinking alcohol altogether. I still eat greasy foods in small amounts and eat slowly, as I used to eat very quickly.
Absolutely no eating or drinking within three hours before sleep, and I also kept my upper body slightly elevated while sleeping. This is said to help prevent reflux at night. By combining such long-term treatment and lifestyle improvements, the symptoms gradually subsided, and now that I have become accustomed to this lifestyle over time, I have become a completely different person.
