The color of stool can easily change depending on the food consumed. Green stool is commonly caused after eating a lot of green vegetables. If it is temporary, you can rest assured. Green stool can also occur when bile is not properly broken down in the intestines. It is caused by severe diarrhea when stool passes quickly through the colon. This is because the greenish bile in the stool mixes with intestinal bacteria and turns brown.
2. Black
Black stool is a sign of bleeding in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. The blood resulting from mucosal injury mixes with food, then encounters oxygen and oxidizes, turning black. This can be caused by conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastritis, or stomach ulcers. It is common to see black stool along with symptoms like a burning sensation in the stomach and difficulty digesting.
Red
If the stool is red, it indicates bleeding in the digestive tract near the anus, which could be caused by conditions such as ulcerative colitis or diverticulitis. Before the age of 40, blood in the stool is often due to hemorrhoids. If a small lump protrudes from the anus or itching is felt, and bright red blood is seen in the stool, it is likely to be hemorrhoids.
Red bloody stool may indicate colon cancer. If you experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, rapid weight loss, thin stools, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation, you should visit a hospital immediately.
4. Cloudy gray or white
If you observe cloudy gray or white stool, biliary atresia may be suspected. Bile does not mix properly with the stool, resulting in stool that looks like clumped white rice or mashed tofu. Gray stool can also be seen in cases of cholecystitis or gallstones. Additionally, in pancreatitis, when fat digestion ability decreases, the stool becomes closer to white due to the fat content.
