(Helpful Tip) How to properly manage hemorrhoids at home

How to properly manage hemorrhoids

If you improve your lifestyle habits, most of the protruding hemorrhoids associated with hemorrhoid symptoms will significantly decrease.

Eat meals on scheduled times and drink plenty of water

Many people experience constipation when they reduce their food intake for dieting. No matter how small the meal, it is best to focus on foods high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, and eat them according to the scheduled mealtime.

Carbohydrates are not transformed and are fully absorbed and stored in the body. For bowel movements to occur, a certain amount of stool must be formed in the intestines. Therefore, even with the same amount of food, reducing the proportion of carbohydrates and increasing the proportion of foods high in fiber that form stool can help prevent constipation.

You should drink plenty of water along with high-fiber foods. Men should drink at least 900ml of water per day, and women should drink 600-800ml of water to soften the stool, preventing anal tissue irritation and gradually improving hemorrhoids. Drinking one cup of warm water three times a day before meals and eating meals can help meet the minimum required water intake.

Additionally, if constipation becomes severe and you take a laxative as prescribed by your doctor, it is essential to drink about one cup of water along with the laxative, as this helps to soften the stool. Laxatives assist in making bowel movements easier and help reduce pain during defecation.

Use a hemorrhoid cushion and stand up briefly every 30 minutes

It is recommended to get up and sit down briefly every 30 minutes, and there is no need to stand for a long time each time you get up. Getting up briefly every 30 minutes is to relieve the compressed anus and hips.

And it is essential to use a hemorrhoid cushion to sit in a position that does not put pressure on the anus regularly.

When choosing a hemorrhoid cushion, it is better to use a cushion that is not too soft and allows for unconscious frequent movement, rather than one that is plush enough to sit on comfortably. The cushion should be perforated to prevent pressure on the anus and designed in a way that makes it difficult to sit in the same position for a long time. No matter how elastic and firm the sponge cushion is, the sponge will compress over time, so it is better to choose a hemorrhoid cushion with initial height and firm sponge. This way, even if the sponge compresses later, there will be a gap between the cushion and the floor, preventing pressure on the anus and allowing you to sit comfortably.

Avoid reading books or using your phone for extended periods in the bathroom whenever possible.

3. Sit in a bath with lukewarm water

There is a common misconception that sitting baths with warm water are beneficial, but hemorrhoids are vascular conditions caused by swollen blood vessels, so sitting in warm water can cause the protruding tissue to swell further and become more painful. It is essential to use lukewarm water, that is, water at body temperature which does not feel warm to the touch. Sitting baths should be done at least once a day after bowel movements.

What is sitz bath?

This is a treatment method that relieves pain and swelling in the anus and speeds up wound healing after surgery.

<How to take a sitz bath>

Prepare lukewarm water (about body temperature) that is never hot, in a sitz bath or a basin for washing the face.

It would be good if the size of the washbasin can cover the width of the toilet with the cover removed, so that it can be placed on the toilet and you can sit on it.

2. There is no need to dilute disinfectant for sterilization.

3. Soak the anal area in the prepared water for about 10 minutes.

4. Washing the anus with a showerhead or similar device is good for maintaining cleanliness, but it cannot replace sitz baths.

Precautions for sitz baths

1. If anal bleeding, swelling, or pain occurs, take a sitz bath 2-3 times a day.

Immediately after anal surgery, it is performed about three times a day.

Always take a sitz bath immediately after bowel movements.

Sitz baths in lukewarm water promote blood circulation, relax the sphincter muscles, and reduce pain, helping the wound heal faster.

4. Weight Loss

Being overweight is the fundamental cause of all diseases. If your BMI is high and you are overweight, it means you have more body fat, poor blood circulation, and relatively less muscle mass, which results in less movement of the body and slower recovery. If you are overweight, it is very important to reduce to a normal weight and increase muscle mass so that your body becomes lighter and more mobile, which is crucial for hemorrhoid recovery and prevention of recurrence.

If you consistently follow these four simple rules, you can escape the pain of hemorrhoids.
