Postoperative review of finger skin cyst (ganglion) surgery

A skin cyst (ganglion) appeared on my right third finger earlier this year, initially very small.

It started with small blisters appearing on the same area during summer, but the rate at which they filled with fluid gradually slowed down.

Ganglion cysts are a condition where fluid-filled sacs develop on the palm side or back of the wrist, or on the fingers and ankles. It is the most common benign tumor that occurs in our body. It arises from the membrane surrounding the joint, causing swelling, and can be felt as a lump under the skin. Inside, it is filled with joint fluid. The size varies from as small as a bean to as large as a small chestnut. The cyst tends to enlarge with frequent use of the hand and shrink when at rest. It occurs more frequently in women than men and is most common in people in their teens to thirties.

The exact cause of ganglion cysts is still unclear. However, it is known that the cells of the membranes surrounding the tendons or joints undergo degenerative changes, produce mucous, and this mucous accumulates to form a lump.

 

 

Cyst treatment

 

If there is no pain, conservative treatment is usually recommended. You should avoid using your hands excessively.
If the lump is large or painful, joint fluid inside the ganglion cyst may be aspirated with a needle injection. In this case, since a pocket remains, there is a high possibility of recurrence of the ganglion cyst. If this method is ineffective or if the pain is severe, surgery is performed to remove the main cyst and part of the affected joint capsule that is causing the problem.
Cystic tumors themselves are not dangerous conditions and rarely cause discomfort. Therefore, they are often simply monitored without treatment. Occasionally, cystic tumors may rupture on their own and disappear.
