My friend who is being treated for burns

A friend who was working as a dietitian with me;;;

I was working busy and got a severe burn on my hand;;;

Because of COVID-19, sometimes one person in the cafeteria staff has to take a break, and while supporting them, I accidentally released steam from that huge rice cooker... (Imagine the steam coming out of this enormous pot...;;; Ugh~~)

Ah, even thinking about it now gives me chills...

I also once spilled hot water on my hand and got a burn, so I know how intense the pain is, and I couldn't help but tremble. No matter how cold the water was, the heat in my hand wouldn't go away, and for hours it was so painful and agonizing;;;

Even though I quickly soaked it in cold water, provided emergency first aid, and applied burn ointment, I was worried that it might leave a scar.

I've been visiting the hospital for ten days already;;; but it seems like I'm gradually getting better.

Yonsei Hwasan Surgery is a specialized hospital famous for burn treatment~~

Fortunately, it wasn't far from my friend's house, so it was convenient for my friend to visit the hospital. They said the burn specialist medical institution treated them kindly and professionally. As expected, burn treatment should be done at a specialized medical institution!!!

Still, after diligently undergoing treatment for nearly 10 days, I have improved a lot~~ The bugs have all fallen off, and I'm so relieved that there won't be any scars left.

Burns inherently cause significant pain, and since scars may remain, seeking a specialized medical facility seems to be the best treatment option.

I'm so glad to hear that with advancements in medical technology, many methods have been developed to treat burns more quickly, with less pain, and without leaving scars compared to the past.

Just having a burn on the hand is painful and distressing, but it makes me think once again how much more painful it must be for those who suffer burns all over their body.

Burns seem to happen really in a moment of mistake...

I must always remember to stay alert and cautious when touching or handling hot things.

I will also tell you the first aid method for burns.

1. When you have a burn, the first step is to cool the affected area with cold water.

Depending on the severity of the burn, it is recommended to soak the affected area in cold water for about 10 to 20 minutes. This is an emergency measure to prevent the burn from spreading and to reduce inflammation and pain.

However, be careful not to immerse the wound in water that is too cold or to use excessive water pressure, as this can cause damage to the wound.

2. When you have a burn, it is best to quickly remove any jewelry or accessories from the burned area. Since the wound can swell and there is a risk of infection, it is essential to remove accessories such as rings or watches, as well as clothing. If clothing is stuck to the skin, do not forcibly pull it off; instead, it is better to go to the hospital and have medical professionals handle it.

3. If blisters form due to burns, do not pop them arbitrarily. Blisters form to help the skin recover and protect itself. Popping blisters increases the risk of bacterial infection and slows down healing. If you accidentally pop a blister, it is best to wash it with running water and cover it with a clean gauze.

4. It is recommended not to apply ointments arbitrarily before treatment.

If the burn is very minor and can be sufficiently treated at home with ointment, then it's understandable. However, if the burn is severe, applying ointment can actually make treatment more difficult because it takes a long time for the hospital to clean off the ointment.

Please!! Please!! Do not apply soybean paste!!!

While some folk remedies work well, there are many stories suggesting that applying potatoes, soybean paste, or soju to the wound is beneficial, but improper use of these folk remedies can lead to skin contamination or secondary infections...

Let's just treat it at the hospital in this wonderful world of ours.

6. When you get a burn, it is best to cool the area thoroughly with cold water, then wrap the affected area with clean sterile gauze or bandage and quickly go to the hospital. However, if there is no bandage at home or if the burn is severe, the bandage might stick to the wound, so it is important to judge the situation carefully.

7. Keeping the burned area above the chest is said to help reduce swelling and pain.

8. How to respond to symptoms of burns

When burned, the symptoms can be classified into first, second, third, and fourth degrees.

1st-degree burns are superficial burns of the skin, causing a stinging and painful sensation. Usually, they peel off like scales after 5 to 10 days and disappear without leaving scars.

Second-degree burns are deeper burns that extend from the epidermis to the dermis, accompanied by blisters and severe pain. From second-degree burns onwards, hospital emergency treatment is necessary, and a recovery period of about 2 to 4 weeks is required. Depending on the severity, scars may remain.

3rd-degree burns are very deep burns that damage the skin and subcutaneous fat layer, causing the affected area to turn brown or white. Since they also damage muscles and nerves, prompt emergency treatment at a hospital is essential, and even after treatment, scars and aftereffects remain, often requiring skin grafts.

4th-degree burns are severe burns that damage the entire skin layer down to the muscles, nerves, and bones. They are the most serious burns that can threaten life, so prompt visit to the emergency room is necessary. Even after first aid, continuous treatment and rehabilitation are required.
