Once a tooth is broken or lost, it is difficult to restore. Therefore, meticulous brushing and dental care are extremely important in daily life. However, there are cases where brushing should actually be avoided. According to foreign media such as The Mirror on the 5th (local time), Dr. Shadi Manuchehri, a dentist in London, introduced three situations on her social media platform TikTok where you might hear the advice not to brush. These are immediately after drinking coffee or eating, and right after vomiting. Let's take a closer look at the reasons for each.
◇ Immediately after drinking coffee
You should avoid brushing your teeth immediately after drinking coffee.
Dr. Shadi Manuchehri said, "Coffee is acidic, but adding milk and sugar makes it even more acidic," and "If you brush your teeth immediately after drinking acidic coffee, you can cause abrasion of the teeth by rubbing the acid onto them." He further recommended "waiting about 20 to 30 minutes or using an oral rinse." In fact, the acidity of coffee erodes the thin protective layer on the surface of the teeth, and brushing at this time can cause strong stimulation to the teeth. Additionally, coffee contains tannins, which can bind to proteins remaining in the mouth and penetrate tiny holes in the tooth surface, potentially causing discoloration. To prevent tooth discoloration caused by coffee, it is advised to drink coffee within 30 minutes and rinse the mouth with water immediately afterward.
◇Immediately after a meal
According to Dr. Shadi Manuchehri, it is better not to brush your teeth immediately after eating.
He said, "For the same reason as when you drink coffee, brushing your teeth immediately after a meal can damage the enamel." Especially in the morning, brushing before breakfast is beneficial for dental health. The plaque that causes cavities is usually most abundant when you have just fallen asleep overnight. Brushing right after waking up not only helps remove plaque effectively but also stimulates saliva production, which helps kill bacteria. Dr. Shadi Manuchehri also said, "In fact, there are many bacteria in the mouth when you wake up in the morning, so it's better to brush before breakfast."
◇ Immediately after vomiting
After vomiting, you should first rinse your mouth thoroughly with water before brushing your teeth.
The remaining stomach acid in the mouth can erode teeth and impair gum regeneration ability. Dr. Shadi Manuchehri said, "After vomiting, people want to brush their teeth because of the smell. However, the contents of the stomach are acidic, and teeth are mineral-based," and "When the stomach contents enter the mouth, the mouth is in an acidic state, and brushing at this time can cause the acid to be rubbed more onto the teeth." He further advised, "It is better to brush about 30 minutes to an hour after vomiting," and "If you want to eliminate the vomit smell, it is recommended to rinse your mouth with an oral rinse. This helps neutralize the acidity in the mouth."
