Do I really have to take medication for high cholesterol?
Every time I get a health checkup, my LDL cholesterol levels come out high. The cardiology doctor at the general hospital recommended medication for hyperlipidemia. I would like to share ways to normalize the levels without medication.
First. What is hyperlipidemia?
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by an increased level of fat components in the blood.
Second. What is the cause of hyperlipidemia?
Genetic factors, obesity, diabetes, and alcohol can contribute. However, I was at a normal weight, had no diabetes, and did not drink alcohol at all. My mother was taking medication for hyperlipidemia, so I mentioned this to the doctor, and they said that genetic factors are significant.
Third. Do I really need to take cholesterol-lowering medication?
In three health checkups, my LDL cholesterol has always been high. Occasionally, I experience left chest pain, so I underwent a cardiac ultrasound and CT scan at a major hospital's cardiology department, but there was no abnormality in my heart. However, the blood tests showed high cholesterol, and they said medication is necessary. But since cholesterol-lowering medication must be taken for life once started, I find it difficult to begin. I asked the doctor if exercise and dietary changes could help, but he said that unless you're an athlete, they won't be very effective, and based on his judgment, he said medication might be necessary. I said I would think about it.
Fourth. Instead of taking medication for hyperlipidemia, what did I choose?
Although I initially said there was no effect from exercise, I consistently walked 10,000 steps every day. As for my diet, I boldly avoided snacks, flour, and carbonated drinks, and I cooked meats with high fat content, such as pork belly. Instead, I ate a lot of dietary fiber vegetables, which are foods that lower cholesterol. After a year of consistent effort, my health checkup results showed normal levels.
The method I use is not necessarily the correct answer. But quitting flour was really difficult. Not being able to eat things I like such as bread, ramen, and noodles was really tough. However, if you dislike taking medication, you should do it. If you have difficulty taking medication for hyperlipidemia, please make sure to try this.
