Korea ranks first in the world in the incidence of colon cancer among people in their 20s to 40s.
According to a paper published last year in the international medical journal Lancet by a research team at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the United States, the incidence of colorectal cancer in Korea among people aged 20 to 49 was 12.9 per 100,000, the highest among the 42 countries surveyed. This figure is even higher than that of Australia (11.2) and the United States (10).
While the exact cause remains unknown, Westernized eating habits are believed to be a major contributing factor. In particular, the incidence of colorectal cancer among young people is on the rise worldwide.
Dr. Karen Jagiyan, a colorectal surgeon based in California, has raised awareness by revealing five foods to avoid, which are linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer in young adults. She explains the foods that increase the risk of colorectal cancer and their impact.
First, Dr. Jagiyan warned, "Regular consumption of red meat, such as beef, veal, lamb, and pork, increases the risk of colon cancer by approximately 18%." He emphasized that cooking meat directly over an open flame further increases the risk, adding that there is no clear standard for safe intake.
Processed meats like lunch meats, bacon, sausage, and pepperoni are even more dangerous. Studies show that consuming just one serving daily increases the risk of colon cancer by 15% to 35%. "The less processed meat you eat, the better," he said.
Beverages like soda and juice contain high-fructose corn syrup. Dr. Jagiyan warned, "Consuming two or more sugary drinks a day doubles the risk of colon cancer compared to those who consume them less than once a week."
Alcohol increases the risk of not only colon cancer but also other cancers. Dr. Jagiyan cautioned that "the common belief that moderate drinking is good for your health is incorrect," and cautioned those who habitually drink alcohol to be cautious.
Ultra-processed foods not only cause a variety of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, and premature death, but also increase the risk of colon cancer. He recommended reducing consumption of chips, factory-made packaged bread, and cookies, citing them as examples.
Consuming foods rich in dietary fiber plays a crucial role in preventing colon cancer. Dietary fiber promotes the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria and reduces the risk of various cancers. Adequate dietary fiber intake is highly likely to reduce the risk of various cancers, including esophageal, stomach, colon, and rectal cancers.
With the incidence of colorectal cancer in young people emerging as a global problem, experts advise that maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding risk factors are essential.

▲Fruit: Apples, oranges, etc.
▲Vegetables: cabbage, broccoli, etc.
▲Whole grains: oats, brown rice, etc.
