The story of a Vietnamese woman in her 50s who was diagnosed with intestinal obstruction after eating too many persimmons and having food debris stuck in her intestines has been revealed.
According to Vietnamese media outlet Jardine Dat Vietnam on the 20th, Vietnamese woman A (59) suddenly felt gas and pain in her stomach. She experienced a fever, nausea, and vomiting, so she visited the Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with intestinal obstruction caused by food waste. Intestinal obstruction occurs when the small or large intestine is partially or completely blocked by various factors, preventing the smooth discharge of intestinal contents.
The doctor in charge said, “The cause was the persimmons that Mr. A ate excessively three days ago,” and “When you eat foods with a lot of fiber and tannin, such as persimmons, figs, and bamboo shoots, the fiber and tannin in the food stick to the stomach acid and turn into food waste, which causes the intestines to become blocked.” Tannin is a type of polyphenol, an antioxidant, and produces a bitter taste when ingested. Mr. A underwent surgery to clear the blockage and was discharged six days later.
Intestinal obstruction is a condition in which the intestines become blocked. It occurs when the intestinal motility is paralyzed or blocked by a foreign substance. Gas, feces, and food waste accumulate in the intestines, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. Tannins, which impart a bitter taste, bind with stomach acid and digestive proteins in the digestive tract, creating food waste. Foods containing tannins include persimmons, chestnuts, acorns, tea, and pomegranates.
When the intestines become obstructed, food, digestive fluids, and stool cannot pass through the body and instead stagnate, causing abdominal pain. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, a distended abdomen, vomiting, and chills. Intestinal contents cannot pass through, leaving only a small amount of water, preventing the passage of stool. Furthermore, blood volume decreases due to insufficient absorption of water and electrolytes. This can lead to shock due to low blood pressure or dehydration. In severe cases, intestinal perforation can occur.
Intestinal obstruction is broadly divided into mechanical and functional obstruction. Mechanical obstruction occurs when the intestine is physically blocked, while functional obstruction occurs when intestinal motility is impaired. If the intestinal obstruction is not as severe as in functional obstruction, treatment involves gentle exercise, such as slow walking, and medications that promote bowel movement. If this does not improve or if the obstruction is mechanical, surgery is performed to open the blocked area. If an intestinal disease, such as a tumor, is the cause, treatment of that disease is the priority.
