Eggs eaten every morning are an excellent source of protein. However, research has shown that for women over 55, they can also be a tool for protecting brain health.

According to a study published in *Nutrients*, older women who eat eggs every week may experience less memory loss or a decline in brain function.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, tracked egg consumption from 1988 to 1991 for 890 adults aged 55 and older participating in the Rancho Bernardo Study, an ongoing long-term health study in California. Participants underwent a series of cognitive tests during that period and were tested once more between 1992 and 1996. The tests measured overall cognition, executive function, and semantic memory.

The study results showed that among women, those who ate more eggs per week experienced less decline in categorical fluency, a test of verbal ability and executive function, over a four-year period. Specifically, women who ate five or more eggs per week showed a 0.5-point smaller decrease in categorical fluency scores over four years compared to women who did not eat any eggs.

Overall, the ideal number for older women was found to be five eggs per week. In other words, eating one egg a day can prevent cognitive decline. The researchers explained, “This suggests that despite the high cholesterol levels in eggs, they have no harmful effects and may play a role in maintaining cognitive function over time.”

“Eggs are rich in nutrients such as choline, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which have been shown in previous studies to be associated with better brain health,” said Dr. Donna Kritz-Silberstein, the author of the study. “The high-quality protein in eggs may also help preserve nerve structure and function.”

He also added, “Unlike meat, eggs contain dietary cholesterol but have relatively low levels of harmful saturated fat. This allows them to provide cognitive benefits without the potential downsides associated with high-cholesterol foods.”

=============

I had a rolled omelet for lunch,

I think boiled eggs would be better for your health than that.

For some reason, it's the same with deep-fried eggs,

You can eat eggs

Try taking two a day.
