Reactive oxygen species are essential for the body. While the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species have been overemphasized, their beneficial functions have been relatively overlooked. However, maintaining them at appropriate levels is crucial. Reactive oxygen species play a key role in killing viruses and other pathogens that invade the body, making them easier for white blood cells to ingest.

 

Reactive oxygen species are produced in the mitochondria of cells, where nutrients and oxygen combine to convert them into energy. They are inevitably produced as long as we breathe and carry out life-sustaining activities. 3-5% of the oxygen we breathe into our bodies inevitably becomes reactive oxygen species. These include superoxide (O2-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radicals (OH-). Reactive oxygen species are unstable and highly reactive, making them particularly sensitive to stress, pathogens, and ultraviolet light.

Research has shown that free radicals suppress diabetes and alleviate degenerative arthritis. The free radicals produced through exercise also strengthen the body's immune system. They function as signaling molecules, exerting beneficial effects on health. For example, when blood sugar levels rise, they send signals to "regulate insulin" and "secrete appetite-suppressing hormones." Exercise, on the other hand, sends signals to "repair damaged cells."

 

However, the optimal amount of reactive oxygen species has not yet been determined. It is possible to estimate the level of excess reactive oxygen species in one's body by examining one's physical condition.

Representative examples include vitamins C and E.
