Is it okay to take cholesterol-lowering medication for a long-term period?
A few days ago, I went for a health check-up for the first time in three years.
Last year and the year before, due to various overlapping situations such as resignations and moving, I didn't have the chance to undergo a health check-up.
As my lifestyle became more irregular, I gained over 15 kilograms, and my BMI and everything else went beyond overweight into obesity.
This summer, I started participating in community activities again and challenged myself to lose weight. My weight is gradually decreasing, but during this health checkup, the doctor told me that my cholesterol levels are high, especially LDL cholesterol, and advised me to take medication for hyperlipidemia.
Although the period of gaining a lot of weight was quite long, I never once thought about taking medication, but honestly, it was shocking.
Watching overweight people on TV taking blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, and cholesterol-lowering drugs, I thought to myself, "I'm not like that..." and had a little doubt in my mind. But hearing such things from my doctor was quite shocking.
Contrary to my shock, the doctor said that this medication is not something to worry about and that you can just think of it as taking a supplement. He mentioned that he is not yet at the stage of needing medication, but once he is over 50, he plans to start taking it regularly.
I picked up a month's worth of medication, but honestly, I am still feeling stunned.
I'm not sure whether this medication is just for prevention and can be taken lightly while maintaining my current lifestyle, or if I really need to be extremely cautious and completely overhaul my entire way of living from start to finish.
Are there any members among you who are taking medication for hyperlipidemia?
Is this medication not just for one month, but something I need to keep taking continuously from now on?
This is my first time experiencing this, so I feel unfamiliar and worried, but the doctor spoke so casually and lightly that I want to believe what he said outright.
I will continue to challenge myself to lose weight for my health and will work hard to bring my BMI down to a normal level.
If my current weight, blood pressure, and fasting blood sugar are measured daily, and my weight decreases while my cholesterol levels go down, can I naturally stop taking medication?
If anyone has experience, it would be very helpful to hear any stories or details about how they lived.
