(Hypoglycemia) Why do people always boil ramen when they get home after drinking?
Why do people always boil ramen when they get home after drinking?
Some people, after a heavy night of drinking, go home and make themselves a bowl of ramen. It's because they're hungry, but why does this happen?
It's due to temporary hypoglycemia.
Alcohol absorbed from the stomach and intestines is detoxified in the liver. The liver converts glycogen into glucose, which provides the body with the energy it needs.
It plays a role in supplying (blood sugar). However, if the liver is preoccupied with detoxifying alcohol, the amount of glycogen converted into glucose decreases. This lowers blood sugar, and various organs in our body that require it send signals to the brain that they are lacking energy. This is why hunger becomes more intense.
Alcohol can affect the appetite center, making you feel hungry. There are actual research findings. A research team at Indiana University in the United States used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the brains of participants who had consumed alcohol. They found that compared to before drinking, the hypothalamus was more active and focus on food increased. A British study also found that alcohol-administered mice ate 10-20% more than usual.
If you eat ramen every time you drink, even though it's a natural phenomenon, you could end up accumulating more fat than usual. Organs like the liver temporarily delay their normal metabolic processes to cope with alcohol. The same goes for energy burning. Energy burning is delayed as it reacts to alcohol, and any remaining energy can be stored in body fat cells. While you might think that drinking alcohol increases metabolism because it generates body heat, this is simply a result of alcohol's vasodilation.
To recover from hypoglycemia, drink a small amount of something sweet, like honey water. Eating bean sprouts, tomatoes, or green tea is also a good way to relieve a hangover.
