5 Symptoms and Management Methods of Hyperparathyroidism

One month prior to the follow-up observation, four months after partial thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer

I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism

Sharing 5 everyday management tips to fix it.

I was told that thyroid function is normal during follow-up after thyroid cancer surgery.

However, I have been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and am currently under management.

5 Symptoms and Management Methods of Hyperparathyroidism

The parathyroid gland plays a role in regulating calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. Usually, it shows a high form of hypercalcemia, but I have been diagnosed with normal calcium levels but vitamin D deficiency, so I am consistently managing my daily routine to improve hyperparathyroidism.

Management of Hyperparathyroidism

1. Vitamin D intake

5 Symptoms and Management Methods of Hyperparathyroidism

Hyperparathyroidism is often asymptomatic, so in cases without symptoms, it can be managed through regular monitoring without special treatment. However, I am managing hyperparathyroidism by prescribing medication due to symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that regulates the promotion of calcium absorption in the intestines and the reduction of calcium loss through urine, so proper management is necessary.

Spend at least 30 minutes in sunlight each day

Vitamin D can only be absorbed through food by about 5 to 10%, and the remaining 90 to 95% must be produced through sunlight. The doctor also said it would be good to expose her to sunlight, so I do not apply sunscreen and expose her face and limbs every day, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sunlight is strongest, for more than 30 minutes to help manage hyperparathyroidism.

3. Consumption of iodine-rich foods

Iodine is an essential nutrient for producing thyroid hormones in our body. During hospital visits, it was mentioned that iodine intake is too low. Among foods high in iodine, seaweed is a representative example, so I am trying to consume 1 to 2 bowls of seaweed soup weekly to manage hyperparathyroidism.

4. Healthy lifestyle habits

It is important to avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and excessive caffeine intake, so I practice abstinence from alcohol and smoking to manage hyperparathyroidism.

5. Regular health check-ups

Regular health check-ups seem to be important. Monitoring calcium levels and thyroid hormone levels through blood tests and consistently checking for abnormalities appear to be essential for managing hyperparathyroidism.

It may seem like a simple lifestyle management method, but these days I am thinking that I might have gotten sick because I didn't follow simple rules. Moving forward, I will continue to manage consistently to normalize my hormone levels and work towards a complete recovery from hyperparathyroidism.
