(Diabetes Exercise) My blood sugar level rises when I exercise. Is it right to do it correctly?

My blood sugar level rises when I exercise. Is it okay to do it correctly?

Regular exercise is essential for people with diabetes. However, some people report that their blood sugar levels rise after exercise. A reader sent us a question expressing concern about this post-exercise blood sugar spike.

"My blood sugar level rises when I exercise. Is it okay to continue exercising? I'm also curious about whether elevated blood sugar levels from exercise have any negative health effects."

Q. Is it okay for my blood sugar to rise after exercise?

A. You need to check how much your blood sugar level rises.

When we exercise, our bodies secrete numerous hormones that raise blood sugar levels. These include glucagon, cortisol, and catecholamines. These hormones stimulate the liver to produce more glucose to prevent a rapid drop in blood sugar levels during exercise. If the amount of glucose produced by these hormones exceeds the amount consumed by the muscles, blood sugar levels rise. However, once exercise is over, these hormones naturally decrease, and as the muscles begin to consume glucose, blood sugar levels return to normal levels, so there's no need to worry.

Although changes in blood sugar levels due to exercise are natural and temporary, it is necessary to check whether the changes are excessive depending on the intensity and effectiveness of your exercise.

Typically, low- to moderate-intensity exercise will immediately lower your blood sugar levels, while high-intensity exercise will cause your blood sugar levels to rise and then begin to decline after an hour or two. Test your blood sugar levels immediately before and 30 minutes after exercise. If your blood sugar levels are higher than 100 30 minutes after exercise, your exercise intensity may have been excessive, causing a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. While your blood sugar levels will naturally decrease afterward, it's best to avoid rapid changes in blood sugar levels. Therefore, consider reducing the intensity of your exercise or slightly increasing your pre-workout meal.

It's a good idea to check your blood sugar again an hour after starting exercise. If your blood sugar falls below 70, you should also reduce the intensity of your exercise or eat a snack before exercise to prevent hypoglycemia.

In summary, the natural blood sugar changes that occur with exercise are ▲blood sugar levels should drop 30 minutes after starting exercise, or if they do rise, the increase should be less than 100, and ▲blood sugar levels should be 70 or higher one hour after exercise.

===================

I see it these days.

Before exercise. After exercise. Before meals. After meals

I think they check everything before and after snacks too.

For those with diabetes, it's important to check after exercise.
