Urinary stones are a condition notorious for their excruciating pain. They occur when a stone dislodges from the kidney and becomes lodged in a narrow part of the ureter, obstructing the flow of urine and causing excruciating pain. The stabbing pain radiates from the side or abdomen to the lower abdomen. Even changing position can cause the unbearable pain to break out in a cold sweat.
 
This pain often lasts for several minutes or even hours. To prevent stones from forming, it's best to make every effort to eat a balanced diet. Let's explore some dietary habits that can help prevent and manage kidney stones.

 

 

Adequate hydration is essential

 

Drinking plenty of water dilutes urine, which can help prevent stone formation. This also increases urine output, potentially helping stones pass naturally. First, drink at least 2 liters (10 cups) of water daily to increase urine output. Sufficient hydration is even more crucial during the summer months, when sweating is common, or during physical activity.

 

Avoid consuming animal protein as much as possible.

 

Excessive consumption of animal protein (meat, fish, eggs, seafood, etc.) increases urine levels of calcium, oxalic acid, and uric acid, which are components of kidney stones. This lowers urine acidity, creating an environment conducive to stone formation. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid high-protein diets and limit animal protein intake. However, animal protein is an essential nutrient for the body, so it should be consumed occasionally, even if not in large quantities.

Salt as little as possible

 

Salt (sodium), the main ingredient responsible for saltiness, increases the amount of calcium excreted in urine. Since salt can contribute to stone formation, it's recommended to eat bland foods whenever possible. To reduce salt intake, avoid salty foods when choosing foods and minimize the use of salt (salt, soy sauce, soybean paste, red pepper paste, sauces) during cooking.

 

If you're going to drink it, choose a drink that contains citric acid.

 

Citric acid is a substance that helps prevent the formation of urinary stones. When choosing a beverage other than water, it's a good idea to choose beverages rich in citric acid, such as orange juice, plum drinks, or lemonade.

 

Also eat foods rich in fiber

 

Foods high in fiber interfere with calcium absorption and bind to calcium, increasing its excretion through the stool. They also have the effect of reducing calcium excretion through urine. Whole grains, vegetables, seaweed, and fruit can also help prevent urinary stones.
