Comprehensive Guide to Thyroid Symptoms | From Thyroid Medications to Hospital Tests and Management at a Glance

Fatigue, weight changes, swelling... Could these be symptoms of thyroid issues? We have compiled essential information from hospital tests to medications and management methods that you need to know.

Lately, I feel extremely tired, and I experience unexplained weight gain or loss.
Do you feel any soreness or swelling in the middle of your throat?

You might have once thought, "Is this just stress?" and let it go.
But I only recently realized that this could really be a thyroid symptom...

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ located in the center of the neck.
It plays a role in secreting hormones that regulate the entire body's metabolism.
When this small organ encounters a problem, more symptoms appear than you might expect.

Fatigue, swelling, weight changes... These could be symptoms of thyroid issues.

Thyroid symptoms are divided into two categories.
If there is too much hormone, it leads to hyperthyroidism.
If it's too low, it indicates hypothyroidism.

I experienced functional decline, but
Even though I don't eat much, my weight is gradually increasing.
Not only is the fat increasing, but swelling as well... the face, hands, and feet are all puffed up.
I continued to feel lethargic, speak slowly, and have a foggy sensation in my mind.

Conversely, my friend had hyperthyroidism, but
Even when I stay still, I sweat, and my weight keeps decreasing.
I felt anxious and nervous, and my heart rate was over 100.

Thyroid symptoms can appear so completely differently, so,
If you always dismiss feeling tired as just a lack of energy, it can be really dangerous.

If your neck becomes swollen, be sure to visit the hospital.

The first thing done at the thyroid hospital is a blood test.
You can immediately check for any functional abnormalities by looking at the TSH, T3, and T4 levels.

And I also perform ultrasound.
If you suspect there is a nodule or tumor in the thyroid,
We observe more accurately through fine needle aspiration biopsy (tissue extraction with a thin needle).

I also felt some heaviness and discomfort in my throat, so I had an ultrasound done.
They said there is a small nodule, but it's not large.
Fortunately, it wasn't malignant, but we agreed to have follow-up examinations every six months.

Thyroid medication, not necessarily taken lifelong

Once you start taking medication, you won't stop for life, right?
That was the part I was most curious about, and it depends on the condition of the thyroid.

In cases like mine where autoimmune thyroiditis has caused decreased thyroid function,
There are cases where medication is discontinued after improvement following a certain period of use.
On the other hand, in cases where the thyroid gland has been removed through surgery or treated with radioactive iodine
Thyroid medication must be taken for a lifetime.

The representative medication is Levothyroxine (Synthroid).
I take it every morning on an empty stomach.
Regular blood tests are necessary to adjust the dosage and maintain it without side effects.

Thyroid management, consistency is key.

Thyroid management is not difficult.
You can start by gradually changing your lifestyle habits.

- Regular health check-ups
Adequate iodine intake through seaweeds like sea mustard and kelp
- Reducing stress
Maintain consistent sleep, meal, and exercise schedules

It may seem insignificant, but this is the routine that saves the body.

Conclusion – Don't just ignore these symptoms

Fatigue, swelling, weight changes, restlessness, trembling, palpitations…

If these thyroid symptoms persist, it's a good idea to have it checked at the hospital.

Blood test → Ultrasound → Biopsy if necessary
If we proceed this way, I can be sure of my condition.

Treatment does not necessarily mean taking medication for a lifetime.
Many cases can be managed through lifestyle simply by getting regular check-ups.

Don't just brush it off by saying "That's just how I am."
Don't miss even the smallest signals your body sends.
Thyroid hospital, it might be closer than you think.
